Protocol Sorry, that went into more "woo-woo" shit than I meant to lol It's an important topic to me.

"I also don’t even care if someone says ‘that girl HATED you’ or whatever. Because in my mind I’m just like ‘yeah, who have you talked to cold…ever? You warm approaching pussy piece of shit.’ :D "

lol keep that mindset. :) Hell, it's funny when a girl hates you. Sometimes I'll try to get slapped just for fun. Nothing that happens in a bar should be taken seriously…that's why I don't get into fights, there's just nothing in a bar that's that epic and life-changing that I can get riled up about it. It's just a playground. Sometimes people take things too seriously, but I have the social skills to chill them out about it and my frame of "nahhh, this really isn't that big a deal" is strong enough that pretty much everyone caves to it. And if they don't, cool, I leave. No biggie, I can go to a bar up the street or I'll be out tomorrow night chatting up some more chicks and having more adventures so who cares?

Type of ecosystem Other
Working group WG 4: Socio-territorial
Location Moixent, Valencia
Purpose of the experimentation The aim of this experiment was to determine if the waste from sorting cereals cold be a potential source for native seeds. Fundación Global Nature sow every year some plots in cooperation with Celler del Roure for recovering traditional varieties of cereals (wheat and rye) and testing their potential for bread production. The crops are managed organically and during the 2020-2021 campaign the hypothesis of using the seeds obtained in the grain cleaning process was tested due to the very low cost of obtaining such material (actually, it is free) and the aparent diversity of seeds obtained.
List of species sown Seeds obtained during 2020-2021 campaign were sent to experts for their identification. The results show that despite the great variability expected in the seed composition obtained and the very significant amount of non-native material (cereal grains represnet up to 60%), there are a few species which could be potentially interesting from the comercial perspective. However, the conslusion so far is that this leftovers obtained for cleaning ay have a potential use at farm level (grass strips for avoiding erosion), even if they contain only a low quantity of native seeds.
Protocol Protocols are detailed in he report attached informe_limpia_cereal.docx (1.0MB)
Free description (facultative) By the end of 2022, the results of the seeds obtained in 2021-2022 harvest will be available. We want to compare the diversity of seeds with the one obtained in the previous campaign, and we will also sow the material obtained (mostly cereals and leguminous species, with a 6% of native seeds; probably to be improved with material obtained in 2021-2022 campaign) in a site of the farm which is facing erosion problems.

Date (or period) of the observation autumn 2022
Description / Observations Seed batches are being prepared for being sown in the coming weeks, if the weather allows. They come from different cereal campaigns (2021 and 2022) and will be tested in two different sites: Celler del Roure for preventing soil erosion according to erosion risk maps produced, and in an educational orchard in Castellón

Location Moixent, Valencia
Purpose of the experimentation This pilot has 2 intervention sites, the first one is a vineyard on "albariza" soils and the objective was to create a cover that could be alive as long as possible. Apart from the agronomic benefits of having the soils covered, "Albariza" soils become impassable just with a few mm of rain, so another expected result was the covers to ease operations during vintage. 4 different treatments were tested (no cover, straw mulch cover and 2 mixes with native seeds). The second intervention site was for restoring disturbed soils in front of the winery, in this case with the aim of avoiding soild erosion, but also combining it with a reasonable aesthetic value. The list of species sused are detailed in the report attached.
List of species sown The list of species sused are detailed in the report attached.
Protocol The protocols and experimental details are included in the report attached.
Free description (facultative) The protocols and experimental details are included in the report attached. The sowing operation was performed in winter 2022 and the monitoring protocols for assessing soil biological activity improvement, pollinators' activity and vegetation cover were prepared. Unfortunatelly, the conditions for the experiment were extremely bad: after the sowing operation there was no rain during almost 3 months (driest winter ever recorded) and then it was followed by the rainiest March ever recorded (>400mm). Seed germination was very poor in both cases, predation of seeds probably occured and in the vineyard pilot we found some signs of the seeds to be washed to the lower parts of the plots. For this reason the pilot was CANCELLED.

Type of ecosystem Grass strips
Working group WG 2: Scientific
Location Talaván (Cáceres)
Site manager  Foundation Global Nature bought the land more than 25 years ago and has been under its exploitation since then. It is managed and coordinated by the staff of the foundation´s agri-environmental branch, who manage the farm, not only for the normal farming activities but also all the research activities.
Purpose of the experimentation Due to the continuous grazing and presence of livestock over the past years, and due as well to short and not enough resting time of the soil, the area has a high percentage of poor and empty soil, with a lack of proper and continued cover. The vision of this project is to restore the dehesa status within the exploitation.
The target is to recover the previous situation of the land, prior to the continuous grazing and the traditional management over-labored.
The goals are the increase of the quality and the quantity of pasture, then the area needed per food ration will be reduced; at the same time the soil is much more covered and the hydric erosion is reduced.
List of species sown Ornithopus sativus
Lotus corniculatus
Medicago polymorfa
Medicago lupulina
Trifolium repens
Trifolium alesandrinum
Trifolium hirtum
Trifolium subterraneum
Lolium rigidum
Lolium perenne
Dactilo glomerata
Festuca ovina
Poa pratensis
Bromus sp
Protocol The area that has been used for the native seeds pilot plot takes approximately 4ha, however with the presence of trees the total sowing area is about 2,2ha.
The preparation of the land for sowing consisted of several steps:
- Ploughing to remove the remains of other species and leave the soil ready for sowing. Harrowing after the rains to open the land.
- The soil has been fertilized with manure. Have been spread 6 trailers of manure +1 trailer approximately in shovels, due to the difficulties of the terrain
Each trailer is 6tn of manure -> 7x6= 42Tn, 42Tn/2,2ha = 19Tn/ha approx.
- Additionally, 2 bags of organic phosphorus at 27% have been added to improve the soil, being evenly spread.
1 bag = 600kg, so 2 x 600 = 1200kg, between the 4ha, it is about 300kg/ha.
The recommended amount is about 250kg/ha.

Type of ecosystem Monospecific culture
Working group WG 3: Socio-economic
Location Lansargues (34)
Site manager  Guillaume Duez
Purpose of the experimentation
Experiment the production of wild flowers seeds according to the Vegetal Local label requirements.
The aim is to collect data concerning the production of 26 Mediterranean species among a group of 7 producers with various profiles. Information on the plants behavior and the plot management will be gathered in tables in order to improve the knowledge on the multiplication of these species. The final goal is to produce a proportion of these 26 species in larger plots.
Guillaume work with his two colleagues Morgane and Vincent. They used to plant wild flowers mixes in between melon crops. The role of these flowers is to attract the pollinators and species that eat pests. They choose annual flowering species to fit in the melon culture system. They can couple seeds production and protection of their cultures.

Urban garden in Valencia

Type of ecosystem Other
Working group WG 4: Socio-territorial
Location Valencia
Site manager  Ayuntamiento de Valencia
Purpose of the experimentation The aim of this pilot was to test 3 types of seed mixes adapted to different conditions of the public garden. The 3 interventions were agreed with the local authority and the gardeners. One intervention was done in a semi-shaded area, another one was a grassland type garden and the third one was a plot in the middle of a urban orchard. In the three cases, the objective was to create appealing gardening sites with native species and enhancing the number of pollinators. The test was performed in 2021 and 2022, and during 2022 and 2023 the self replication of the communities established will be followed-up. During the testing, 4 plant inventories were done as well as monitoring of the pollinators' activity using FGN's methdology from Observatorio de la Biodiversidad Agraria.
List of species sown The list of species used as well as the degree of establishment can be found in a specific report attached.
Protocol The document attached includes all the details regarding the plots, list of species and results achieved Report_GT4_pilot_Valencia.docx (1.9MB)

Update interventions

Date (or period) of the observation November 2022
Description / Observations As detailed in the results' report, the first phase of the pilot in the urban garden of Valencia was finished in summer 2022. In the 3 interventions, we could see a great development of the native seeds, both in terms of soil coverage and representativity of the plant community (low deviation from the mixes used). Pollinators' activity was also assessed through specific methdologies, resulting in a very high abundance and diversity of pollinators compared to other areas.
As this pilot has a strong aesthetic component, it was decided to remove the vegetation in the plots once the plants had produced the new seeds (end of June 2022). Plants were left on the ground, as a mulch layer, with the objective of having a good resowing capacity. During the winter (2022-2023) plots will be monitored for assessing plant re-growth, and if the weather conditions allow, a complete assessment will be done in March 2023.

Protocol The experimental site consists of 16 10m2 plots between 4 rows of vine. Each of them is 1m large for 10m long.

Surface tillage, with a scrubbing of the vegetation and passage of a toothed cultivar to 15 cm depth without turning the horizons, just to prepare the seed bed.
The semix was done on the fly, in 2 passes. A first passage with the smallest seeds mixed with a substrate to homogenize (sawdust), a second with the largest seeds. The soil was raked (for hoe mixing) and a roller was passed to compress the soil.
Free description (facultative) Monitoring
Indicators wanted
- List of species that were successfully installed (with reproductive success : new seeds produced on the site)
- Percentage of target community developed after one/two years
- Presence of related fauna (pollinators, spiders, orthoptera...)
Corresponding protocol or methods
- phytosociological survey on each plot : list of all species developed in the plot, with cover index for each of them ; in addition, cover index for vegetation (all species) / bare soil / litter for each plot. Minimum three surveys /year for each plot.
- protocol for related faune to be defined : probably an exhaustive assessment 3 times/year.
