To make an obsolete analogy, there’s Sheldon’s somatotyping. Sheldon figured there were, broadly speaking which is the only way to speak of these things, three body types, ecto-, meso-, and endo-morph. You graded them from one to seven. But being higher on one did not mean you were necessarily lower on another. It was not zero sum, although being excessively skinny would be hard to square with being excessively fat at the same time. Sheldon thought there were associated personality types. The latter has been discredited, which means, as one shrink told me, “It explains too much,” which is a killer in the mental biz.
My point is, you could be a four on the ecto and a three on the meso, with a hint of endo, and if somebody else figured you needed another point in endo–fat–it didn’t require taking a point away from ecto–skinny. This was such a big deal that our TA in the required into to physical ed–gym–our freshman year were required to give everybody a score. Some prof getting data for a study, I suppose.
Now, if all you know of the person sitting across from you was their M-B score, you would be more likely to be right than wrong in expecting various items. But the likelihood that that is all you’d know is vanishingly small.
I knew a guy who had terrible social anxiety due to PTSD in some war or another, but when an opportunity came along to improve his family’s situation, he went into sales. Did well, but I bet the first few years damn’ near killed him. If all you knew of him was his social anxiety, would you have guessed what would happen?
Anyway, discussing categories is fun, I suppose, and allows for people to work off years’ of resentment. But it doesn’t help much with an individual.
