Missions
The Strategic Unit for Research and Services in Biotechnology and Genetic Resources is responsible for developing research and technological development activities with a view to:

to ensure the conservation, assessment, documentation and economic valuation of national genetic resources;
carry out studies that aim to improve the understanding of the relationships of plants and animals with the environment, in order to identify genetic combinations, mechanisms and technologies of reproduction and selection/conservation strategies that exploit, in a more efficient way, the available natural resources, particularly in the Mediterranean regions and even if they contribute to improving the understanding of their behavior in the face of possible climate change scenarios;
to develop programs for the genetic improvement of strategic animal and plant species for the development of agricultural systems, through the introduction of new varieties and the selection of races of these species.
promote the conservation of national genetic resources in the animal and plant areas, through the creation and maintenance of living collections and national germplasm banks.
