Your second sentence is absolutely correct and I counsel all my clients about this, both male and female. My advice: never, ever get involved with someone who is not fully self-supporting. If things don’t work out, you’ll be paying for that mistake for a long time. Even a pre-nup doesn’t save you in this instance. As a matter of law, a judge will disregard a pre-nup if upholding it means the non-monied spouse could end up being homeless or a public charge (legalease for welfare).
The OP is absolutely wise to inquire as to why his GF is still having her housing paid for by mommy and daddy at age 38. The women on here defending the GF’s situation are hypocrites. You can be damned sure they’d have eyebrows raised if it was a 38 year old man that still had his housing paid for by mommy and daddy.

I agree there are probably a bunch of hypocrites re your last comment. I just don’t understand people that, knowing financial discord plays a role in ~40% of divorces, still parrot the whole ‘money doesn’t matter it’s all about love’ nonsense.
